High Turnover

Ahh – turnovers.

They are one dessert that really brings back memories of my grandmother and summers at the beach.

She would always show up to every family gathering with a huuge box, filled with delicious raspberry turnovers.

I remember peeking at them before dinner just to see how many she’d brought…to see how quickly I’d have to act to secure one for myself. …seriously, you had to have a gameplan..those things would be gone in seconds!

The other day I was suddenly hit with the desire to make some of those beauties…perhaps as a way to cling on to the last days of summer…or maybe to celebrate the fact that I can heat my oven to 400 degrees without fear of turning my house into a sauna.

Either way, I decided to make some apple-raspberry turnovers – a perfect combo of berries (in jam form) and tart apples. Mmm, mmm good.

All you need? A granny smith apple – diced, 2 Tbsp of raspberry jam, a little bit of lemon zest (my addition, optional)…and voila you have a pretty stellar turnover filling. I forgot to add the cornstarch…the filling was fine without it. Tuck the filling into 6 squares of rolled out puff pastry and you’ll be in heaven.

Seriously…so good.

400 degrees and twenty minutes later…

Perfection.

They’re light, fluffy, buttery, crispy, sweet and tart simultaneously.

Breakfast tomorrow?

Probably.

Finding favorites

Woo – we are more than halfway through the week! :-D

Evening, loves. How’s everyone doin?? I know…what is this? Posts…multiple…in a row? Shocker. haha

My morning got off to a slowwww start. I pushed the snooze button one too many times and managed to get myself up, coffee made, lunch made, breakfast consumed and make myself acceptably presentable before rushing out the door for the T. Stepping outside was like hitting a wall though…whew was it muggy or what this morning in Boston??

Of course, coffee came in the ONLY clean mug I had left (I need to do a load of dishes haha). Disney! This mug always reminds me of my best friend.

Speaking of Disney, I’ve only heard amazing things about Toy Story 3. I really want to go see it. Maybe I can convince someone this weekend.

Anyway – back to the morning. I hastily assembled a never-ending obsession…PB&J roll ups (I’ve been obsessed with Teddie Super Chunky All Natural lately). I also threw a big ole apple in there.

My morning was long and I didn’t get to dive into lunch until late. However, I ate lunch – with a (gray) view. It looks like terrible weather in the photo, but it was really nice out…and the clouds passed and it was beautiful not too much later.

I came home and immediately dug into banana bread (Lara-style).

Dinner was a combo of spinach, brown rice and hot sauce and Morningstar Farm’s Buffalo Wings. Delicious.

I love revisiting favorites…the buffalo wings, the pb rollups…nom.

  • Any favorites you find yourself revisiting again and again?

I hope you all are wonderful!! <3

Just One of Those Days

Evening bloggettes. Rain.Rain.Rain has been the theme of the day here in Boston. It’s windy now, too – so I can hear the rain and the tree outside scraping against my window.

Overall, today’s been a pretty decent one. Productive…busy. Interrupted by intermittent beeps from my fire alarm (though I think I finally fixed it!!)…

I slept in a little bit, but was up with coffee made by 9. I knew I had a lot of reading and note-taking to tackle, as well as studying for a quiz and other miscellaneous stuff for school. I leisurely enjoyed my coffee and got down to business around 10…not too shabby.

Today was a grazing sort of day — I just munched as I got work done. An apple with PB&Co‘s White Chocolate Wonderful, dried apricots (which I took a picture of…but I’m not going to post it – they just look…wrong. haha)….were among the things I devoured throughout the day.

When dinner time arrived – I decided that maybe I should tear myself away from work and actually sit down to a meal? It was a much needed break (though, I did take little ones throughout the day).

For dinner - stir fry! yumm. Spicy, veggie-filled goodness.

What’s for dessert, you ask? (‘cuz you know…there has to be dessert)

The obvious. haha Microwave mint brownie. :)

Sooo happy tomorrow is Friday — I’ll be even happier when it is Friday night! haha :)

  • Anyone else ever have days where you just seem to graze instead of actually sitting down to a full-fledged meal?

I don’t do it often…but today was just one of those days.

Happy (almost) Friday, everyone!!

Totally "Wirth" It

Happy Saturday, lovelies! I hope you are all enjoying your weekends!

First and foremost, I want to let you guys know about the AH-MAY-ZING (yes, so great that I had to spell it wrong) and HUGE giveaway that the lovely Jocelyn is doing over at Jocelyn Eats Fresh! It’s amazing — Chocolate, Luna Bars, Lara Bars….I could go on and on! Check it out for yourself!!

Today’s been pretty sweet as far as Saturday’s go. I woke up to a very dry apartment (my humidifier had run out of H2O over night) so I decided to put caution to the wind…and open my windows. A slight paranoia that the super dry air might be what caused my fire alarm to go off the other day is what spurred it all. haha Miraculously at 7:58am it was 37 degrees out…so I crawled back under my down comforter and enjoyed the warmth AND the fresh air. Amazing.

I got up about an hour later and made myself a hazelnut latte — put a little too much of the hazelnut syrup in it so the sweetness quotient was a liiiitle high, but it was really good. I started a new canister of espress, and I really like this stuff. The grind of this espresso is smoother, and the coffee has a more full-bodied flavor than the last kind I had. Yum.

After lounging around the apartment, I ended up doing my eyebrows. Yep, wax my own…a skill I acquired freshman year of college in order to save $$$…my skillllz have definitely improved over time. haha Needless to say, there have been a few screw ups, but those were long ago and nothing a brow pencil couldn’t fix. haha I’ve had a couple of male roommates in the past FASCINATED with the fact that I can do my own eyebrows. It was funny to watch them cringe. :-D

I scurried to get ready to meet my dad, his wife and my brother for lunch. Today, casual was the name of the game.

I apologize for my streaky mirror.

Lunch destination? The Jacob Wirth Restaurant in the theatre district. I’ve been here quite a few times, and have always had a great meal. It’s been open since 1868, and a theatre district favorite. It’s history is pretty neat. :-)   Plus, their beer selection is out of this world! They also recently filmed a wedding reception scene for Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz’s movie “Knight and Day” there.

We were supposed to meet for lunch at 12:30…I was there at 12:30…nobody else was… *sigh* 15 minutes later my family rolled up.

Lunch was delicious. They have amaaazing (buttery) cornbread…I helped my self to 1.5 pieces. haha I decided to splurge and got their Boursin Mushroom Burger with Sweet Potato Fries. Yummm! I ate half of the burger, the pickle and all of the fries (of course).

It’s creeping up on dinner time for me, and I’m still pretty stuffed (even with two walking-excursions post-meal) so, for right now, dinner might be a snack plate of a pink lady apple (love them) and the verrrry last of my Cinnamon Raisin Swirl.….I’d be sad, but I think I have like 6 months worth of PB&C in my pantry right now. haha

Today I picked up People Magazine’s “Spring Fashions” issue…I am having MAJOR fashion cravings. haha :) I haven’t been shopping for myself in sooo long — I think it’s time for some retail therapy soon!! :)

  • Are there any current trends that you really love??

I do have to say that I’m still obsessed with Ray•Ban Wayfarers…do I own a pair? No. I love them though.

  • Are there any  pieces or accessories that are must haves/obsessions for you?

I am obsessed with sunglasses and handbags. Though, the nice thing about both of those things? They alllllways fit, and sizes don’t change from store to store. ;-) haha

Soup in a box

Hola beauties! How are you all doin??

I slept in today — the combination of the fact that I could not fall asleep last night for the life of me (major random food cravings kept me awake…popcorn finally did the trick) and the fact that I had no classes to get up for today meant that sleeping was totes on the agenda. :) It felt glorrrious.

In spite of sleeping in, I was very productive! It started off with a verrrry strong latte. I think I may have finished only half of it and I was setttt. haha

I set out to clean my apartment — which was in desperate need of it — and had UP playing in the background. I simply love this movie — especially the music in it. Okay, and I’m a sucker for Doug, the talking dog. :)

After 96 minutes of cleaning (as, that’s how long the movie is) — I set up and got myself organized to do work this afternoon. I continued my list of what’s due. Luckily, I have a few more things checked off of the list now.

I was briefly distracted by hunger pangs, and the drama of 3 police cars and a fire truck arriving across the street. I have no clue what happened, but it distracted me enough to not take photos of my cheese, apple and popcorn.

I did. however, think it’d be fun to take pictures of the drama. Whatever it was. haha

Returning to my studies — I was especially productive for the rest of the afternoon.

For dinnahh, I decided to whip up a soup mix that my mom gave me as a stocking stuffer for Christmas.

While this was bubblin’ away (which, btw — made my apartment smell so AWESOME)…I decided I wanted some Green Goodness. Voila.

The soup only took about 40 min (and one minor mishap of boiling over…wooops, sorry clean stove!), and it was absolutely delicious. It was spicy and smooth…and just comforting. I have plenty of leftovers so we’ll see how well it “ages”! :)

Dessert, of course, was my cinnamon puddin’ from last night — revisited. haha Yum, yum, yum.

I’ve got to, at least, start a paper tonight — but we’ll see how far I get with that. I should get as much done as possible, but we’ll see.

Oh! I wanted to mention that I got rid of the twitter for this blog. It was a pain balancing two — and why not just OWN my blogging and use my initial account anyway, right? If anyone feels like it, I’m @jilianmarie on Twitttah, my account is private, but just send me one of those request dealies! :)

I hope you ladies (are there any guys out there?) are doing awesome!! Anyone got any major TV plans for tonight? It’s quite the night for television!
