Boloco Lovers Unite

Calling all Boston-area  bloggers, readers and friends (or anyone else who may be interested!)

Alicia from PMG PR contacted me today to let me know about this awesome event that Boloco is putting on for The Prouty which benefits the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center!

I was happy to help spread the word about this great event, as my love for Boloco (and especially their GUAC!) knows no bounds, and cancer hits too close to home for me.

The event itself is a Boloco Burrito and Sam Adams Beer Pairing! It’s taking place on Thursday,  June 9th, at the Boloco Pearl Street location. Tickets are just $25 – and there are two different tasting times: The first from 5:00 – 7:00pm and the second from 7:30 – 9:30 – pick what works best for you while tickets last!

Oh – and Food Should Taste Good will be there, too. So many good eats!

What better way to kick off the weekend a little bit early than with some burritos and brew for a fantastic cause?!

Wanna learn more…

Please join us at boloco Pearl Street on Thursday, June 9th, as we enjoy burritos & brews to raise funds for Team Boloco who will be riding The Prouty on Saturday, July 9th. The Prouty is a 30/50/100 mile bike ride to benefit the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Boloco’s head chef, Jason Hutchinson, will be preparing boloco favorites in addition to some newly inspired flavors yet to hit the menu! And our good friend, Todd, from Samuel Adams Brewery will be pairing our burritos with the Sam Adams Summer Styles Variety Pack. Finally, Food Should Taste Good will be on hand sampling a variety of chips, including their addictive Cheddar flavor! While the portions will be on the “disturbingly small” side, we promise you’ll leave with a belly full of snacks, beer, and burritos. What could be better than that?

We’ll also be collecting sign-ups for anyone who would like to be a part of Team Boloco’s Prouty Ride as well as selling some sweet cycling-related gear, like boloco water bottles and bike jerseys.

Raffle prizes? Yup, we’ve got those, too. Each ticket is $5, or 4 tickets for $15…

  • Boloco card loaded with 52 freebies… yup, a burrito a week for a year.
  • Bucket of Cheer – 2 t-shirts, 2 Boston Lager Perfect Pint Glasses, 2 hats, 2 bottle openers, and a Brewer Patriot Certificate good for 12 cases of Samuel Adams (for pickup at the brewery), valued at $400.

Pancakes for Dessert

So the other night – I went out to dinner with friends, and then called it an early evening. I can be such a homebody, and my bed was calling my name.

However…lucky for me, a certain cupcake boutique was right in my path as I walked home (okay, I could have easily avoided it, but really? c’mon…cupcakes…). I popped into Sweet with nothing in particular on my mind, knowing they were closing soon, I wasn’t expecting there to be much of selection.

Ohh – I was so wrong. haha I ended up with a cupcake that I had never seen on their menu before – or even thought of in my wildest dreams.

Blueberry.Buttermilk.Pancake.

It is this awesome, light buttermilk cake – which gets crispy on top – filled with just the right amount of blueberry jam! Perfection. The best part…easily the maple icing…soo delicious and not too sweet.

Behold (with unfortunate, artificial lighting…):

*cue the angelic choirs*

..and as always…it’s truly what is inside that counts…

I know that I’m a diehard chocolate girl – give me a piece of dark chocolate cake or a red velvet cupcake (okay, not *technically* chocolate) any day…but this was seriously something great.

It was light, and since the cake wasn’t too sweet, it lent itself to the preserves really well…plus, like I said before – the crunch to the top of the cake was fantastic.

Oh, and I could have eaten a bowl of that maple icing. Seriously. Hook me up with an IV of it…so good. …the lil’ blueberry was of course delicious, too.

I honestly would have never thought to make a pancake-like cupcake!

  • What about you? What’s something you’ve stumbled upon lately that you never would have thought to do? A dish? A flavor combo?

Simply Irresistable

Hello, hello loves!

There’s a little part of me that gets a slightly apprehensive about doing posts that are heavy on the meat factor – I know a lot of you are vegan or vegetarian, and I dunno – it just does. haha I’m not a vegan or a vegetarian, though, I appreciate both like nobody’s bizznazzz. However – labels aside  I just don’t eat a ton of meat – especially red meat – cost-wise and taste-wise.

However, every now and then I really appreciate a killer burger or a great steak. …Especially when that burger is a Boston institution….

Ahh, Mr. Bartley’s Burger Cottage - seriously, the best burgers in Boston, in my opinion. They grind their own meat on premises, Guy Fieri has paid them a visit, and honestly I’ve never had a burger of theirs and regretted it – and there are A LOT of burgers to choose from.

Sometimes you just gotta go for it, get messy and dive in – head first.

I knew I wanted a raspberry lime rickey without needing the menu- they’re famous for ‘em. They’re also famous for their frappes!

Then it was time to study the menu – I love that it changes, and that all the burgers are named after Boston celebs/sports figures/policitians, other popular culture figures or just something funny/uncomfortable to say (the Viagra, anyone? – actually, I do want to get that one someday).

I ended up settling on the “Michelle Obama (she’s hot & spicy) blue cheese burger with cajun seasoning and fries.” I subbed sweet potato fries. Nom and Blue cheese – bring it on.

No nonsense. Seriously – such a fantastic burger . They actually know how to cook a burger to order, and keep it feeling like a  burger that you feel like was just grilled up in your backyard. The MObama was delicious! and woo – the cajun seasoning gave it a definite kick! Plus – you know me & sweet potato fries…love at first bite.

My friend, Amanda, ordered the “Jersey Shore Burger (over the top)with bacon, cheese, grilled mushrooms & onions, w/ onion rings” which looked sooo good! I took a picture of it – but it was blurry and didn’t do it justice…but trust me – cheesy, mushroomy amazingness. We were talking about how they should do a fried pickle topped burger for Snooks. haha

We both ended up as members of the clean plate club:

An awesome meal, a great server – I totally forget his name (I want to say it was Ryan?), and a fun evening of sharing ketchup with the people on a date next to us (they cram you in there, and force you to make friends – it’s great!). They don’t have a bathroom (grandfathered in – that’s how long they’ve been around) and only take cash – so be prepared! Trust me it’s allll worth it.

Then we decided to “walk off” our dinners (okay, I know, I didn’t actually walk off the calories of that sucker) by walking from Cambridge back to Boston. …over the river we went – this was interesting for me as the girl with a slight fear of heights…wobbly knees were definitely present as we crossed over the frozen Charles!

Love my city at night!

  • What is something that your city, town, etc. is known for??

Snow Day

Considering this is the view (well, an early morning version) outside of my window – I thought I’d mentally get cozy with some reliving of dinner last night!

Last night,  I went out to dinner at Teatro, here in Boston, with two friends. Teatro is easily one of my favorite restaurants (that I’ve tried!) in the city. I love their small plates and the fact that the menu changes. I had a great time catching up with friends, laughing and indulging in amazing, amazing eats!

We shared 2 small plates and a side to begin with:

buffalo mozzarella, roasted peppers and oregano

This plate was incredible – I’ve never had mozzarella like this. It was so light and creamy, and the peppers had this sweet and sour thing going on that was delicious.

crispy calamari with lemon aioli

Always a winner. I can’t pass up calamari on a menu…so light and crispy - be careful of the fried hot peppers in there though..spicyy but so good!

3 words: parmesan.truffle.fries.

Addictive. These are so crispy, delicious and packed with flavor!

For my entree, I was torn between two pizzas – I ended up going with the pizza topped with duck confit, spicy sausage, and pumpkin – simply for the fact that it was a really unique option.

a lil' blurry, sorry

It was really fantastic – balancing the sweetness of the pumpkin, the savory, lux flavor of the duck, and the spiciness of the sauce  – I’m a freak for duck so this was naturally a hit with me; their pizzas are ultra-thin crust…I took a bit home…but only so I could save room for…dessert.

We shared two desserts between the 3 of us:

chocolate, vanilla and mint gelato with a pistachio biscotti

This was delicious – I can’t say I’ve ever had mint ice cream or gelato that was legitimately minty – real mint. It was so refreshing.

warm dark chocolate cake, vanilla gelato, raspberry sauce and a lace-cookie-type garnish (of some kind)

This was incredible – my absolute favorite. A moist, dense cake – the richness was cut by the tang of the raspberry and of course…add vanilla gelato and it’s just over the top amazing.

I know I’ve sung the praises of this restaurant before – but they really are fantastic. Food and service are amazing – the staff is so accommodating! -  and the atmosphere is cool and relaxed.

Now…to day dream of dark chocolate cake while watching the snow blow by…

Wait a minute…

…this is a food blog? :-P

I realize that recently this blog has definitely lacked a lot of foodie elements…when I’m home, I have a tendency to not cook as often, or I end up baking late at night (happened on multiple occaisions) and the photos just turned out horrible…though the cookies and scones were delicious!

I’m now back in Boston, but to wrap up my time at home I made a deeelicious chicken and cranberry salad sandwich…my mom got me hooked on these.

pulled rottiserie chicken + dried cranberries + mustard + the tiniest bit of mayo

It’s light, fresh and not full of gloppy mayo – not a fan. I tend to use whole grain mustard as the majority of the binder, it’s a nice contrast to the sweetness the cranberries bring. Plus, on some awesome whole wheat bread and blanketed by baby spinach…ahh, you can’t go wrong.

I spent my morning packing – I somehow managed to accumulate sooo much stuff! Between Christmas and frequent Target trips I ended up with a lot! This was only bag numero uno.

Mi madre and I ended up getting all my stuff down to my apartment successfully – and then I went to assemble the television I’d gotten for Christmas aaaand *snap*…. the two of the little pegs snapped right off! Not only did they snap off, but they stayed IN the bottom of the television. Luckily, my mother stays far more level-headed than I do in these situations (tears may have been shed on my part…) …and within an hour we had successfully spoken to customer service at Best Buy, repacked the television, brought it over to Best Buy at Cambridge Side Galleria, exchanged it for a new one (the guy was like “Damn, they really did just snap off!!”) and had it back to my apartment and assembled! Seriously…my mother is a saint, and I owe her big time.

shotty cell phone pic

This is revolutionary for my apartment. My former television was slowly killing itself. The sound didn’t work…and the colors, no matter how much you fiddled with the settings, were permanently set to viewing the world through rose colored glasses. Now, that doesn’t sound terrible, but when everything white is pink, everything green is grey/brown, light blue looks navy/blackish…well, let’s just say when we turned the new TV onto the Cooking Channel, my mom couldn’t stop laughing at me … “I didn’t even KNOW that they used that color…what they use pink?? brown? green? blue?” It was like I was seeing things for the first time apparently.

Now…ahem…sorry got side-tracked there. Now back in the apartment, I have been cleaning, reorganizing and trying to de-clutter.

I made the discovery that I have about 5lbs of frozen fruit in my freezer…time for more smoothies! Oh, and that I own copious amounts of various liquors…even when I’m not that big of a drinker. My motto: Always be prepared. …wait that’s the Boy Scouts – meh, oh well, they can share.

I was actually proud of the fact that very little had gone bad in my fridge while I was gone – even the milk that I had totally forgotten hadn’t gone completely bad (though, I still threw it out). I’m pretty well stocked for now…

Birthday champagne, too - you know, in case I'm feeling festive

Very excited for using that polenta and the gnocchi!

I’m exhausted from hauling my stuff up lots of stairs today – and I’ll be honest, my kitchen is not in a state conducive to cooking. However, it’s nice finding goodies tucked away in the corner of your freezer.

To the rescue came my dad’s jambalaya. Mmm…a spicy and comforting mix of Andouille sausage, chicken, shrimp, tomatoes, peppers and rice.

Back to the kitchen tomorrow! I’m excited; I have a ton of recipes I’ve been dying to make.

  • Do you ever keep stuff in your pantry, freezer or fridge ‘just in case’? What kind of stuff?
