Who You Callin’ Cupcake?

Undeniably, there has been a large amount of baked goods on this blog in the last month. I promise – the main staples of my diet are not butter, sugar and flour! Though maybe I wish they could be.

As I’ve mentioned before – May = birthdays. Yesterday was my mother’s, and I knew that making a cake or an entire batch of cupcakes for three people (Mom, bro, me) wasn’t really a good idea. Sure, lots of extra…but that means that I’d just keep eating it.

Self-control is not exactly my middle name.

The remedy – get to a bakery stat!!

I had been in Salem, NH earlier in the week, and had noticed a new (to me) lil’ cupcake shop called Who You Callin’ Cupcake? and decided to do a little research – after some Yelp help I decided that it was worth the drive, and got my butt over there before the schools all let out for the day and traffic was ridiculous.

Very easy to get to – the parking lot was a little packed with people getting pizza and subs at a place next door, but they had a couple of reserved spots just for the bakery. Nice touch. I was surprised that the windows looked really dark when I pulled up; I actually wasn’t sure if it was open – but there was that open sign beckoning me to the front door.

I was inititally surprised by it’s darkness – but I took to the more “industrial theme” pretty quickly. It went with the snappy attitude of the name, and quite frankly it was kinda of refreshing to not walk into a pearly, pink bakery full of miniature cakes. Kinda badass.

The case was full of fun looking flavors (the pistachio immediately caught my eye), and the prices were absolutely incredible compared to Boston pricing. $2 – $2.50 per (normal, baked them in your own oven-sized) cupcake (apparently $3 for some that contain liquor). That’s a $1 to $1.50 less than cupcakes (of smaller stature) in Boston! WIN! The girl behind the counter was so nice. I could see some more…traditional individuals… being put off or maybe intimidated by the “Rock N Roll” nature of the place and staff, but judgement gets you nowhere…and in this case you’d be missing out on awesome cupcakes.

After scoping out the case and counters, I settled on 4 cupcakes: Pistachio (one of my mom’s favorite flavors), Red Velvet (I felt obligated ;-) ), White Chocolate Raspberry, and Cookies and Creme.

Packaging and logo – adorable, right? Love the corset on the cupcake – I’ll need one of ‘em soon if I keep eating like this… haha

Alright, let’s get down to business – first off, ALL of the cupcakes were incredibly moist and light. Major points in my book.

The Pistachio.

By the time we dug into this, the nuts on top had gotten a little soft, but that didn’t take away anything from the cupcake. It was light, airy and moist, and the frosting was like air. It was ever-so lightly flavored of sweet pistachio – enough for you to enjoy it and know it’s there, but not overwhelming, and the green color made it a fun one! The scent of the cake was incredible. I’d never seen a pistachio cupcake before, and I would get this again in a heartbeat.

The White Chocolate Raspberry.

This was a vanilla cake, filled with a bit of raspberry jam and topped with, I believe, a white chocolate type frosting and raspberry sauce. Again, a moist and light cake, and the jam in the middle was fantastic – naturally sweet and sour. It was like they just put a raspberry in there. So great. The frosting was great on this one, too – but the jam in the middle stole the show, for me.

The Red Velvet.

Props to them for this one. A great cake, but for me, red velvet is all about the icing – and they hit it out of the park. The icing is a really great, smooth and light cream cheese. I can’t say much more other than they do it better than most other red velvet cupcakes I’ve tried.

The Cookies and Creme.

This was great. I had never seen the whole – cookies in the batter – thing done before. Awesome.

It was still super light – even with the cookies all mixed in – and the frosting was so good.

We shared them all – and they were all fantastic. I think the pistachio was my fave – simply because the flavor was new to me!

All in all – if you’re ever in the Southern NH/Rockingham County area – check this place out. Awesome cupcakes and a badass (but nice!!) vibe.

Cupcakes & Football?

A natural combo right? Well…okay, not usually.

Superbowl Sunday is usually filled with wings, beer, chips, dips, and pizza galore. All of which are glorious things…this weekend, my friend, Amanda and I used the opportunity to get together and stuff our faces with crazy good stuff…like cupcakes, champagne and apple cider. Oh, and we had chips and dip, too!!

I got to Sweet on Sunday afternoon fully prepared to purchase some red velvet cupcakes and be on my way…I thought to myself – surely it won’t be busy – I mean, who is out buying cupcakes on Superbowl Sunday?! I found out…a lot. Mostly tweens…and they were all in the shop being rather obnoxious. I felt bad for the people working; it’s honestly, usually such a chill, quiet little shop and there were just 12 year olds everywhere.

Oh…and they took the last of the red velvet. A crime! Seriously though…they were wiped out – and it was 4pm! They are open until 9 on Sundays!

Unphased by the lack of red velvet (okay, slight shaken…), I chose 3 lil’ cupcakes to share and made my way over for some pre-game catching up and chatting.

Oh, and sparkling Rosé is definitely one of my favorite beverages in the whole-wide-world. I love its sweetness.

Plus…it’s purrrdy!

Chips, hummus, guac and sparkling goodness were enjoyed during the first half – along with lots of conversation, laughter at the adorable, spastic gymnastics of her kitty, and disappointment in the overall “ad/brand” factor of the ‘bowl.

Cupcakes accompanied the half-time show…which honestly, wasn’t a fan. Maybe if the sound had been right…but from the beginning when Fergie was pretty much just straight up screaming…meh. She looked good though! Her bod is ridiculous – even under bedazzled football pads! …and I’m not gonna lie when they started singing “Where is the Love?”…I was secretly hoping that JTimberlake would descend from the ceiling like a little ethereal, falsetto crooning angel. …a girl can hope.

So yes – cupcakes were divided, shared and devoured. Organic Karat…mostly purchased for the fact that it had at least one aspect red velvet…cream.cheese.frosting. Frosting was good – but I wasn’t overwhelmed by the cake. It was good, but not the best I’d ever stuffed in my face.

Cookies and Cream…yes. The cake was great, but the frosting steals the show. My fave one.

Angel Food - something was drizzled on top (something delicious!). I don’t know what it was, but this was delicious. I love angel food cake, and I honestly would never really think to do it in cupcake form. Nom.

Overall, a fab evening. Now. Back to reality…

  • Do you watch the Superbowl? Do you watch for the game, the ads, the half-time show, the celeb spotting?? and what’s on your gameday menu?

Food Coma?

Hello, hello!!

Ahh, I’m at home. Home sweet home. It feels faaabulous. Currently, there is a log in the fireplace and I just finished up a glorious home-cooked meal. :) Let’s start from the beginning though…

I got to come home to this face:

She literally sat ON TOP of me while I was laying on the couch last night. haha Her feet were up in the air and everything!

I think she might have missed me? …just a smidge. hahahaha

I love my pup. haha So I spent the night cuddling with her …she literally didn’t leave my side. :)

My brother got home last night, too. So we got to hang out a little before we both crashed.

When I got up this morning, I automatically thought “CUPCAKE!” haha My red velvet cupcake was downstairs waiting for me…and who is to say that you can’t have a cupcake for breakfast?! haha Not me! I got downstairs and gobbled it up!! Only after I had finished it…it was delicious!…did I realize I had forgotten to take a picture! boo.

Well, I took a picture of the pumpkin cupcake that my brother hadn’t eaten yet…so just imagine that this is a gloriously red cupcake, and you’ll get my experience. haha However, the pumpkin is equally as glorious!

Throughout the morning, I helped my mom with some preparations for tomorrow. I helped her bake cookies, and make a cheese sauce for pearled onions tomorrow. I’m a huge fan of this cheese sauce! Plus the fact that it is completely homemade…major perk. :) I’m so fortunate to have a mom who is a fabulous cook.

My brother and I did some afternoon errands…and he got a muuuch needed haircut. I walked around in Barnes & Noble while he got his hair cut, and I ended up making a purchase that I am very happy with.

The recipes in this book look fabulous, and I love that the recipes are categorized by seasons! :) Plus, there is just so much information in the book about all sorts of foods and their nutritional values. I’m excited to learn! That might be something to save for winter break though — these next 2 weeks will be crazy.

For lunch, I had a few small squares of a spinach and portabella white pizza, and a chocolate and toffee pretzel stick.

For dinner, I had a fabulous home-cooked meal of sweet potatoes with hot sauce, spinach and sausage. Mmmm. Seriously, I rarely have sausage, but this stuff is just so good. A sweet one and a hot one. Yum. My mom and I sat around the kitchen table and just talked. It was great.

So suffice it to say, I’ve eaten well today — with only better things to come tomorrow! Tonight will be spent helping my mom ready for tomorrow, and awaiting the late arrival of my aunt, uncle and two cousins. It is so nice to be home and surrounded by family. It’s just so fulfilling. :)

I hope everyone is having a great week. And Happy Thanksgiving to anyone in the States! I’m so thankful for so much, including all of you!!

Peace, Love & Munchies.
