The Happy Diet

Alright, so today I received the Jan 2011 issue of Glamour (I feel like my issue came really late…regardless.), and much of the issues is about being HAPPY! Which – well, I loved. I mean that’s the point of it all, isn’t it? I blog because is makes me happy, I cook, bake and eat what I eat because it makes me happy, I listen to Glee and Top 40 pop/dance/R&B as loud as it can go because…well, it makes me happy!

Within the mag, they had this section detailing a happy “checklist” – and while that’s kind definitely simplifying things, I totally agree with the majority of them (credit for all goes to Glamour):

  • Exercise – heck yeah! Get those endorphins going..plus, walking out of the gym after a workout, I always feel an extra spring in my step.
  • Eat breakfast - I am sooo bad at this (I’m the queen of gulping down coffee and the running out the door), but having an actual breakfast (when I do) always seems to create the best springboard for the day.
  • Speak up - I never would have thought about this one. It’s true though..boosting your confidence, and reducing your stress by getting something off your chest.
  • Do less – I think this is definitely an idyllic one. While having to do less (and stress less) would be wonderful – sometimes it’s just not in the cards – for me at least.
  • Focus on making memories – A sort of stopping to smell the roses thing…agreed.
  • Go outside – Yes! Cabin fever can be brutal!
  • Hug it out - I’m a hugger…I love this one!
  • Face your challenges - don’t put stuff off – I definitely agree. As someone who has dealt (and still deals) with anxiety, it’s true that the longer you put something off the more anxiety it produces.
  • Say something nice - spread the happiness around! Heck, a guy at Barnes & Noble told me he liked the buttons on my coat because they were “shiiny” – creepy, but it did bring me happiness…if only in the form of a good story!
  • Be grateful – so true…taking the time to realize how fortunate you are is a biggie!
  • Savor your snapshots – photos…inspiration boards!…love it.

What would you add to this ‘checklist’?

At the bottom of that page – they included what they’ve dubbed at the “Happy Diet”.

I agree..especially with the whole “no deprivation” thing…I don’t know a single person who is happy depriving themselves of something they love! I say, bring on the M&Ms! :-D

In my mind, the “Happy Diet” is all encompassing…not just what we eat or drink, but other aspects of our lives, too. I mean, after all, it all impacts us mentally and physically.

Mine?

The good stuff, of course – greens, grains, lean protein, spices, beans, all that goodness.

Chewy vitamins - again, embracing my inner child and love for Flintstone Vitamins, I love the chewy vitamin!

Coffee!! It seriously makes me happy. :)

Chex Mix. It may not be the healthiest..but I love it like no other.

Taking photos (of Chex Mix?). I never knew how much I love this until I started blogging. The good ole point and shoot is still goin’ strong.

Me time! - Getting a new nail polish, or going out and getting mani/pedis…so necessary!

Of course…laughing with friends…and not caring how ridiculous you look in the photos.

What’s in your happy life ‘diet’??

xoxo

Edited: Revelation (not so much)

Hello, hello!!

I knew today was going to be hot when I woke up… well, the weather forecast was helpful, too..but it was almost 80 degrees when I rolled out bed this morning. Okay, that’s a lie…I didn’t roll..more like SPRANG out of bed because some construction company decided it would be best to break out the circular saw during the weeee hours (and by wee hours I mean 8:30 – so I’m being a little overly dramatic here. haha).

Even though it was hot out I was feelin’ pretty B.A. Can you feel B.A. in a sundress? Okay, I’ve decided…yes.you.can.

Don't mind my recycling...

My morning starting off with great eats and with a surprising revelation. Let’s go with the eats first…chocolaty (VERY) POM overnight oats. Pretty much added a banana and some unsweetened cocoa to the mixture (minus the jam) I had yesterday (though obviously I overnighted them instead of stove-topped). These were seriously delectable and so easy.

*Spiel (and yes, I totally looked the spelling up because – personally I’ve always pronounced it “schpeel”…ahh yiddish, I love you) removed after the other revelation: that there was confusion between the website and my bottle on serving size :) *

Okay…now my realization has become confusion…because well – now my creamer and the website say two different things on the nutrition label. My creamer saying the serving is a tablespoon (apparently I was seeing things earlier)…and the site saying it’s a teaspoon. I’m assuming the site is the typo considering 15 mL is a lot more than a teaspoon. I tweeted them. haha

The rest of the day was splendid even though it was toasty out. I decided to venture out for a Starbucks iced tea. Plus, the people watching is always good on a day like today.

I also munched on some snow peas before heading out – class, class, class. Joys. haha

Oh, and a pudding… haha.

I also stopped and picked up snackies for class.

Just a few of my munchies

When dinner-time rolled around, I was ready. I paired brown rice with the soup I made last night. Deeelicious. I had 2 bowls. :-D

Tonight is a good night:

I’m off! Hope you all are wonderful!!

Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut

Hello, hello loves! I hope you are all doing wonderfully. It has been a low-key day for me. VERY low-key. haha I keep telling myself to enjoy the downtime because it’ll be gone in a flash. Summer courses start again for me soon (just purchased those books…oy…really, they should not be able to charge that much for books…), and then shortly after courses start, my new job starts. It will be a very busy summer.

A lot of different bloggers have been talking about living in and appreciating the moment. It’s so true…I haven’t really been appreciating my downtime. All in all, I’ve been trying to appreciate the moment…even if every single moment isn’t the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me. :)

My eats were yummy. :) I definitely appreciate my eats.

The usual. I may or may not have spilled half of this about a minute later…I’m so graceful sometimes.

Peppery eggies. These were sans yolks. Just not in a yolk-mood.

Sometimes you feel like a nut. Pistachios to be precise.

Lunch was stovetop oats. Yum. A combo of rolled oats, water, banana, vanilla extract, cinnamon and some sliced almonds made for a very happy tummy.

Got to the berries right before they were about to turn….time to make a little berry salad. Strawberries, blueberries and blackberries + Truvia = delicious.

Dinner was lettuce wraps x 3. A combo of barley, bbq tempeh, wilted herb salad mix, and red onion all wrapped up in a Boston lettuce leaf. MmmMmm Good.

  • Who watched Glee last night?? How amazing is Chris Colfer (Kurt), right??? Ahhh, I’m still in awe.

Burnt Ends and the Back 9

Ohhh, no…this isn’t a post about barbecue…though that would be delicious.

It’s about the fact that I just burned my thumb on my broiler…yah. Not fun. The ironic part was that I had just gotten back from errands where I had planned to buy an ice cube tray…since I had no ice and was sort of feelin’ like an iced coffee in the morning (not gonna happen)….didn’t buy the ice cube tray…then burned my thumb. Life likes play those little jokes every once in a while, huh? haha

My thumb is fine – nothing a few minutes under cold, running water couldn’t fix. :)

Today was a great day! Pretty cool out, but still sunny and beautiful. A day off equals “sleeping in” aka get up at 9. I woke up craving Panda Puffs. I seriously love how crunchy they are…and they stay crunchy!

It’s funny because a week or so… ago – a reader asked how I always eat so little for breakfast – and, it’s true, I never really ate a sit-down breakfast because I never really was hungry…but my reintroduction to amazing cereals has sort of changed that…well, at least on mornings where I’m not rushing out the door. Even if those cereals are perhaps meant for the 10 and under age group…. :)

My cereal and milk were eaten out of a water glass this morning..feeling fancy? Nope. Forget to run the dishwasher yesterday? Yup. :)

I also sipped on my standard coffee throughout the morning.

I spent the majority of the morning and early afternoon going through all of my school stuff – books, papers, notebooks, note cards, worksheets…basically all the clutter that accumulates over a semester. I figured it’d be good to go through it now, instead of digging through it while trying to study for finals. :)

Lunch was the last of my amazing lil’ tortillas, with French Onion Laughing Cow, mixed herbs and greens and Dietz and Watson’s Buffalo Style Chicken Breast. Deeelicious.

Also munched on some snacks throughout the afternoon:

I got a lot of work done this afternoon. Woo. Hopefully it’ll make the latter part of this week a little less strenuous. Dinner was delicious (and totally worth the injury, haha). I had Morningstar Farm’s Buffalo Wings with honey mustard and peas. Obviously not the most creative meal in the world – but very satisfying! :)

Okay, I do have to say I’m SUPER excited for premiere of the back 9 (episodes) of GLEE! starting tonight!!!

  • Any one else out there a major GLEEK??

As a former choral singer and musical theatre geek…this is my jam so to speak..haha.

Back in the Saddle

Good morning!! I cannot believe its Sunday already AND that I did not really post yet this weekend…*sigh* haha

I hope you all have had a splendid weekend!! My weekend was pretty good, low-key, but good — even with a dentist appointment in there. haha

I’ll kinda do a wrap up of what’s been going on for the past couple of days (which feel like eternity in blog-time, right?)  Friday was a VERY busy day — I trekked all the way to school with ALL of my books (two whole bags worth, joy)…and I put them all in…my LOCKER. YES! A locker…in college. Who woulda thought. haha It feels SO high school, but it’s a life saver. I’m glad my school does it (considering how many kid’s commute its a good idea). I didn’t even have a locker in high school (eons ago)…I think the last time I actually remember using a locker was in 5th and 6th grade…and it might have been plastered with photos of Leo DiCaprio (Titanic, obvssss) and Hansen. hahahahaha

(source)

All joking aside, this locker really will save my ass this semester — or should I say…it’ll save my back.

It was a hectic day which included hopping the train home for my appointment yesterday. While I waited for the train a random middle-aged woman decided to talk to me about how she likes how I do my eyeliner and asked me to instruct her on how to do it…. yah…yayy cities! haha :) I honestly don’t think she was a weirdo…though it was a weird topic of conversation to have with someone you’ve never met or spoken to previously…I think she was just very interested in how I do my eyeliner. ha She continued to talked about galoshes and how she wears them in the garden but doesn’t get how people where them to walk around the city…her thoughts…they’re feet must be cold! My thoughts: I guess you’d rather have cold dry feet than cold wet feet.

Moooving on. Yesterday, I was up bright and early for my dentist appointment (*dread) — it went well actually, my hygienist was so nice (some of the ladies there can be quite mean about flossing deficiencies….haha). I walked away unscathed and happy camper with a new toothbrush, floss, toothpaste and a 2010 planner. haha What? Everyone’s dentist doesn’t hand out planners?? :-p

Breakfast was….A YOGURT MESS! SHOCK! I know it’s been a while. :) Chobani, honey, flax, and sunflower seeds. Nom, Nom, Nom.

In the afternoon, I enjoyed a couple of bowls of popcorn and an apple with PB! Woopwoop! :)

Dinner was baked green (and this time lost of other colors, too) rice. I told my mom that we should use up whatever veggies were gonna go back…so we ended up with the obvious spinach, carrots, onion, eggplant, and tomatoes … I don’t think there was anything else? Maybe? haha Either way…it was freaaaaaking delicious!!! I need to make this at my apartment ASAP.

After dinner, I totally intended on blogging…but I got sucked into the SAG Awards preshow annnnd the SAG Award’s themselves. As a former musical theatre geek…lemme just say…GLEE!!!!!! YAY! haha I’m so happy. Plus, the dress that Lea Michele wore was gorrrg (she was too, obviously)…I especially loved the color.

Anyway — hope you lovelies have had a wonderful weekend…that was mine in nutshell!! :)
